Movement/Exercise Instruction

An integral part of any rehabilitation or strength and conditioning program is to know how to properly coordinate and activate your muscles. Learning proper movement patterns and engaging in specific exercises that reinforce correct movements will help you towards building a strong and mobile body, reducing your risk of injury.

Participating in exercise or activities where you repeat poor movement patterns can lead to repetitive overuse injuries, pain and dysfunction. At Instil Physio, we will teach you to coordinate your body’s movements and activate your muscles properly.  Once moving well, continuing to strengthen these patterns is essential to improving your strength and overall health. Exercises can help if they are done properly but can be detrimental if done poorly. Instil Physio is here to help you learn which exercises are good for you and how to do them.

Manual Therapy

Manual Therapy refers to a technique for assessing and treating different areas of the body. A physiotherapist can use his or her hands to determine if joints, muscles and nerves are not moving well and/or are painful. This technique is usually used with the goal of improving mobility of a joint, muscle or nerve. It can also be used to help relax muscles and improve the activation of other muscle groups. When used in combination with other treatment techniques and exercises, manual therapy is part of a complete treatment plan.

Injuries (traumatic and repetitive strain injuries)

At Instil Physio, our therapists are trained to treat a variety of repetitive strain injuries including the neck, shoulders and back, all the way down to your feet. We also treat acute traumatic injuries, from a broken arm to a rolled ankle at soccer practice. Our goal is to provide you with the most informed and up to date assessment and treatment to help you return to moving well and living your life.

We are also able to help you with your post-operative recovery from a variety of surgeries.  Our physiotherapists can provide you with a detailed assessment and treatments to help you recover and return to functioning at your best.

Recovering from an abdominal surgery? Hernia repair? C-section? Hysterectomy? The scar tissue that can result from incisions with these types of abdominal surgeries can lead to muscle scaring, possible nerve entrapment that can impair muscle function and potentially cause pain.  Four to six weeks after your abdominal surgery, with medical clearance from your surgeon or physician, you can come in for an assessment to determine how your scar is healing (Is it tight? Painful? Healing well?), as well as to learn specific exercises to help you retrain your core and regain strength. Sometimes, when there is scar tissue and/or pain in and around muscles, it can lead to something known as “inhibition” where the nervous system down-regulates input to those muscles/areas of skin in order to try and protect the body from pain. In many cases, people can recover on their own without any intervention, however there are cases where this dysfunction persists. You can be proactive in your recovery by seeking information from a skilled physiotherapist.
